About AFDT

The American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation is the continuation of the oldest transplantation and donation professional organization in the United States. Founded in 1969 in Richmond, Virginia as SEROPP by Drs. David Hume and Bernard Amos, our organization became SEOPF, the South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation. SEOPF gave rise to UNOS, the United Network for Organ Sharing, and now has become the AFDT, the American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation. This is to reflect a broader national reach of the organization and to confirm its continued commitment to scientific and educational activities relating to organ donation and transplantation which will benefit patients, living donors, donor families and the transplant community.

Current activities include Basic and Advanced Histocompatibility Training Courses to prepare laboratory personnel for successful certifications (ABHI CHT, CHS and Diplomate). AFDT is well known as offering “Firsts” for meeting transplant professionals’ educational needs. The Living Donation Conference is an annual training conference in its 13th year, held on the essential aspects of clinical, psychosocial, advocacy, administrative, financial, quality and regulatory issues related to living donation. Likewise the Transplant Quality Institute, in its 8th year, offers general and advanced breakout sessions, information, tools and resources to ensure a program’s performance meets the rigorous quality expectations to remain competitive and compliant in today’s transplant healthcare marketplace. The Living Organ Donor Network, provides donation-related insurance for living kidney and liver donors. AFDT also administers accidental death and dismemberment insurance for transplant center and organization procurement personnel. We are the proud partner of the ASTS Winter Symposium whereby AFDT sponsors the David Hume Lecture which is featured annually. Our procurement billing service rounds out AFDT’s services and serves to facilitate transactions regarding organ donation and sharing.

Membership is open to transplantation and donation professionals of all levels and a center membership is available which can include all personnel in a transplant center.
